All Eastman Kodak Company pallets are marked with a stencil that says "Return to Kodak". The sizes and types are varied, but the Kodak 48" x 40" with BLUE painted ends is by far the most common. The BLUE end Kodak pallets are slightly uncharacteristic from most industry 48" x 40"s, as the stringer height is a full 4".

A. Scope

A-1 This specification covers the repair of reusable, general purpose hardwood materials handling pallets of the double-face style, nonreversible design in flush stringer construction. The wood used to repair the pallets shall not be painted or treated.

B. Applicable Specifications

B-1 The latest edition of the following specifications applies to this specification where referenced:

National Wooden Pallet & Container Association (NWPCA) Specifications and grades for hardwood warehouse, permanent or returnable pallets.

American National Standards Institute (ANSI) MH-1.1.2.-Pallet Definitions and terminology.

Eastman Kodak Company Purchase Specifications EK 7660-Standard pallets, EK 7661-Light Duty Pallets.

C. Requirements

C-1 Intended Use-Repaired pallets shall be of such construction that they will withstand heavy use in the general industrial situation. They will be entered by both light and heavy duty, power or manually operated for-lift and pallet trucks.

C-2 Type- The repaired pallets include in this specification are:

a) Open deck, partial 4-way entry, double-face, flush stringer, nonreversible, NWPCA type 2.

b) Other types as may be specified on a purchase order.

C-3 Size- Unless otherwise specified on a Purchase Order, repaired pallets confirm to ANSI standard size R-6, 48-inches long and 40-inches wide.

C-4 Wood- The wood used for repair shall be new and shall conform NWPCA –Pallet grade “AA” definitions for lumber quality. Deck boards and stringers shall be class “C” hardwood: beech, birch, hackberry, hard maple, hickory, oak (except swamp oak), pecan, or white ash. No knows shall be permitted in the stringers immediately over the notched areas that would impair the strength of the stringer.

C-5 Nails- Shall Conform to NWPCA drive-screw recommendations for use with 5/8 or ½ inch deck boards.

Type: Tempered martensitic steel helically threaded, sinker head.

Hardness: Mybent test degrees maximum, 1040 tempered carbon steel.
Length: 2.250 inch.
Wire Diameter: 0.110 inch
Threaded Body Outside Diameter: 0.138 inch
Head Diameter: 0.280 inch
Point: Blunt Diamond (not longer than 5/32 inch).
Thread: Spiral (minimum of 4 flutes) helical angle of the thread at the pitch diameter shall be 60 degrees, with a plane perpendicular to the axis.

C-6 Construction- When repaired, the finished pallet shall conform to the requirements as set forth on EK 7660 part C-6. Criteria for repair shall include the following conditions:

One broken stringer or up to five broken deck boards or any combination not exceeding six broken boards. The limit of stringers for replacement shall remain at one.

Loose deck boards shall be re nailed provided that the nails are intact and a sound nailing surface exists. End deck boards with more than ½ inch of lumber missing, half the length of the board, will be considered broken, and must be replaced.

New end deck boards, top and bottom must be placed flush with the end of the stringer even if a space will exist between the new board and the existing second board. Deck board dimensions are specified in EK 7660 standard pallets and EK 7661, Light duty pallets.

Broken middle deck boards should be replaced if more then 1 inch is missing, or if the resulting space between the boards exceeds 2-1/4 inches.

a) Nails used to fasten new deck boards must be staggered in order to avoid existing nail holes in the original stringers.

All existing nails must be resurfaced in order to avoid product damage. Nails used in new board placement must be countersunk 1/16 inch below the surface of the deck board.

Nails cannot extend above the surface of any deck board, top or bottom.

b) When replacing deck boards, the original nails which remain in the stringers shall be removed, cut off, or driven in the stringer so that the replacement deck boards lie flush with the stringer.

c) Spacing in between deck boards shall not exceed 1-1/4 inches maximum.

C-7 Chamfer- The two end boards of the bottom deck shall be double chamfered. The two outside boards of the middle cluster shall be single chamfered, the single chamfer facing towards the end of the pallet. All chamfers shall be a minimum of 12 inches long and at a 45-degree angle, leaving 3/8 inch +/- 1/16 inch of wood face adjacent to the chamfer from the outer edge of the deck board.

C-8 Stringers- Stringer dimensions shall be as described in EK 7660, or EK 7661. Unless otherwise specified on a PO, all stringers shall be notched starting 6 inches +/- 1/16 inch from each end. Notches shall be cut 9 inches +/- 1/16 inch along the length of the stringer, and 1-1/2 inch +/- 16 inch up from the bottom edge of the stringer. Notches shall be with round corners at the top on a radius of ¾ inch and with flat tops. Stringers that re cracked to the notch are considered broken and must be replaced.

C-9 Pallets must be returned in clean and usable condition, free from dirt, saw dust, loose nails, stretch wrap and banding. Pallets must be delivered as dry as possible.

D. Methods of Test

D-1 Repaired pallets shall be checked by the purchaser for compliance with this specification and shall make any practical use tests as may be considered necessary.

E. Packaging and Marketing

E-1 Packaging-none

E-2 Marking- Each repaired pallet shall be stenciled with the repair agency’s name, date repaired, and “Return to Eastman Kodak Company” on both outside stringers. Invoices, manifest or packing lists included with each delivery shall also list the PO # and EK 7662-03.

F. Sampling

F-1 Inspection-Pallet shall be inspected for compliance with this specification and for any imperfections which might affect serviceability. Particular attention will be given to nail size and quality, and lumber dimensions.

F-2 Precautions Against Contamination- This material is used in packaging sensitized product. It is therefore, important that the material be free of radioactive particles and other contamination which may exert harmful photographic action. As an Example, radioactive fallout and some silicone compounds have serious effects on sensitized material. Formaldehyde based glues and biocides also affect sensitized material. We therefore, ask that the supplier, in accepting an order, take all necessary precautions to eliminate dirt, radioactive particles, and other contamination including unapproved silicone and formaldehyde compounds. For further information, refer to EK TS14, EK 5803 for heavy metal compliance and EK 5821 for Ozone depletion compliance.

F-3 Shipment in Rail Road Card, piggy-Back or Truck- If shipment is by common carrier, the body shall be clean and free of contamination such as oil, water, dirt, and powder. The inside body shall be in good physical condition including doors that close properly, and floors in a condition to support fork trucks and people. If the common carrier has been steam cleaned and is still moist at the time of loading, a ground sheet of polyethylene (or other suitable material) shall be put down as a moisture barrier.
