Policy
This specification must be adhered to for all pallets supplied to Oldcastle. Any deviation from this specification must be approved in writing prior to any specification changes. Any pallets not meeting the guidelines and specifications outlined below will be rejected at the expense of the vendor.
General Guidelines
This specification is for a 36" x 48” four-way entry style pallet. Each pallet must be inspected for cracked or broken deck boards, broken or damaged stringers and protruding nails. Pallets must be inspected for excessive wear and tear and visible contamination. In addition, all pallets must be free of any dirt, mud or sawdust.
The details of this specification are as follows:
Deck Board Requirements
All deck boards must be a minimum of 5/8” thick and 3 ½” in width. Any damaged deck board must be replaced with the same length, width and thickness board. Damage is defined as any board with a broken off piece greater than 1” x 20”.
If any deck boards are less than 5/8”, they will have to be replaced as noted above. If a pallet has deck boards that are in excess of 5/8” but no more than 3/4” thick, it will be acceptable as long as all boards are of equal thickness.
Stringer Repairs
No double stringers of any type are acceptable. Plate repair will not be acceptable at this time. Any pallet with damaged or broken stringer must be replaced. Damage is defined as any stringer with a broken off piece greater than 1/2” x 4”. Also, a stringer is considered damaged if a crack is greater than one-half of the length and\or one-half of the width of that board. Cracks caused by lumber drying that do not affect the strength of the pallet are acceptable.
Excessive Wear and Tear; Contamination
Any pallet that has rotted or deteriorated wood is not acceptable. Pallets that are grayish due to natural weathering are acceptable as long as all other specifications are met.
Nails
No protruding nails (shiners) and nail heads must be countersunk. Each board that exceeds five inches in width must be secured with a minimum of three nails at each stringer contact. Each board that is less than five inches wide must be secured with a minimum of two nails at each stringer contact. Repair nails must be drive screw type and a minimum of .099” x 2 1/4”.
Repair Lumber
All repair lumber must be cannibalized from other 36” x 48” Oldcastle pallets or be approved virgin material.
Program Integrity
The Green Pallet Stenciling program was designed to help the individual recycler become more efficient by creating value to pallets that otherwise might have been scraped. The quality of the repairs is essential to the success of this program.
